An estimated 10 million lead services remain actively in use across Canada and the United States. For the w ater utilities charged with delivering safe potable water to our homes, identifying and replacing these services is not and easy problem to solve.

A key challenge is that lead services are hidden, lost within age-old construction practices, partial replacements and retrofits, and new build installations. These services are also often outside of utilities direct jurisdiction – roughly half of these assets can lie within private property. These factors have contributed to homeowner led incentive programs being the cornerstone for identifying, and eradicating, the lead service problem. These programs are slow, require proactive homeowners and access to premises, and in many instances are ineffective at making significant progress on the quantity of lead services in play.

Our technology promises to disrupt the identification of buried water services, enabling utilities to conduct broader, more efficient surveys and to create comprehensive databases. These measures can inform more effective mitigation strategies, and reduce the level of water quality risk within our communities.
